CharlieandBenpayavisittoapub,thendecidetovisitaswankyrestaurant.Nowintoxicated,theycomeintoconflictwithaFrenchdandyandhisladyfriend.ThelargeheadwaiterviolentlyejectsBen,andlaterejectsCharliealso.Thepairpayanothervisittoapub,thenmaketheirwaytotheirhotel.Theybecomeinterestedinaprettyyoungwomanstayingintheroomacrossthehall,butwhenCharliespiesonherthroughthekeyholeabellboymakeshimstop.Charlieistakenabacktorealizethattheyoungwoman'shusbandistheheadwaiterfromtherestaurant.Hepromptlychecksoutandmovestoanotherhotel.Meanwhile,theheadwaiterandhiswife,dissatisfiedwiththeservice,alsodecidetomovetoanotherhotel--and,unfortunately,choosethesameoneCharliehaschosen,andoncemorewindupintheroomacrossthehallfromhim.Whentheyoungwoman'sdogrunsintoCharlie'sroomshefollowsinherpajamas.HerhusbandreturnstofindhiswifewithCharlieinanapparentlycompromisingposition.
Thecreditsfadeontoablindmantappinghiswaydownthesidewalk,heentersadingyboardinghouseandhearsashotfiredinoneoftheupstairsbedrooms.AdooropensfromaudiencePOV.Amantumblesoutofthedoorandfalls,slidesandslithersdowntwoflightsofstairsandisdeadwhenhehitsthebottom.Thenfollowsnearly100minutesofflashbackandflashbacks-within-flashbacksaboutaveteranreturingfromthewar,tiredanddisillusioned,onlytofindthathegirlheloveshasliedtohimaboutherrelationshipwithanotherman,andthatmanissadistic,boastfulandtauntful.
